Firm History
Aquillian was originally founded in 2001 as a broker-dealer, established to help sustainability related funds and companies raise capital. The initial goal of the firm was to connect mission-related investors with suitable investment opportunities, in the process facilitating the efficient and prudent flow of capital toward sustainability. Over time, the firm expanded its service offerings to also include research, investment consulting, and advisory capabilities. Consulting initially consisted of due diligence on private companies and investment funds. In 2007, the firm began conducting in-depth landscape analyses of sectors of the sustainability space, and engaging with corporate clients on small strategic consulting projects.
In December of 2008, Aquillian spun off its broker-dealer into a separate firm, Growth Capital Services. This re-structuring reflected the firm’s shift over the previous several years toward a primary focus on investment consulting and advising, and away from being a broker of transactions. It also laid the groundwork for Aquillian to realize its ultimate goal of being a leading merchant bank focused on sustainability, and managing its own principal pool of capital.
